How to choose (official safety information)

1. Check the KC mark and certification number

Under the Electrical Appliances and Consumer Products Safety Control Act, electrical products such as electric mats must have safety certification to be sold. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy advises checking that the product or its packaging carries the KC certification mark before you buy. You can look up the certification number on Product Safety Korea (safetykorea.kr), run by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, and the same site shows whether a product has been recalled. Hand warmers are also consumer products subject to safety confirmation, so the Korea Consumer Agency advises checking for the KC mark and the safety confirmation report number.

2. Overheat protection, auto shut-off and tip-over cut-off

For mats left on all night, check the product description for temperature control and an auto shut-off (timer off) function. For electric heaters, check for a device that switches off when it overheats and one that cuts power when it tips over. According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, using data from the National Fire Agency's National Fire Information System, there were 1,403 fires involving electric heaters and electric blankets from 2021 to 2023 (21 deaths, 142 injuries), most often in December and January. In 49% of the electric heater fires, flammable items had been placed close to the heater, and 83% of the electric blanket fires were due to careless use of the device.

3. Beware of low-temperature burns

Even at a low setting, an electric mat can cause low-temperature burns if your skin stays in contact with it for a long time. Government guidance is to lay a blanket over the mat so it does not touch your skin directly, reduce high-temperature use, and set the auto shut-off timer when sleeping. The Korea Consumer Agency advises placing hand warmers on top of clothing, not on bare skin, and not using them while sleeping or together with an electric blanket. It also recommends that infants, older adults, people with delicate skin, and people with diabetes or poor circulation avoid using them.

4. Work out the electricity cost in advance

Many mats use several hundred watts and many electric heaters use over 1,000 W, so depending on the progressive-rate tier the monthly bill can rise noticeably. Enter the power consumption of the product you are considering and the hours you plan to use it in the Heater Electricity Cost Calculator to see in advance how much more you would pay per month.

Sleeping Warm

Mats and heating tents that warm your bed. Since they stay on all night, check the temperature control, auto shut-off and KC mark first.

Warming the Room and Balancing Humidity

Electric heaters draw a lot of power, so they have a big effect on your electricity bill. Heated humidifiers boil water and release hot steam, so check the steam outlet and where the water tank sits.

Blocking Drafts

Items that reduce wind leaking through window and door gaps. They use no electricity, so there is no added power cost.

Staying Warm Outside

The Korea Consumer Agency advises using hand warmers over clothing, not stuck directly on bare skin.

Kimjang Prep

Mats and kimchi containers that many people look for during kimjang (kimchi-making) season.
